Agree, but I'd like mine in 1/72nd scale.

Re: How about a pre war P-40???

Hows about this tale of a P40 far from home and battling against the odds,
While flying his P40, Clive Caldwell was attacked out of the sun by a pair 109s.
The 109s put 108 bullet holes and five 20 mm shells into Caldwells plane making his flaps inoperative and puncturing a tyre.

Caldwell did not take kindly to this and promptly shot down one of his attackers and forcing the other to turn tail and run for home.

Caldwell returned to base and landed his P40 without a problem.

Betcha couldn't do that in yer fancy pants Spitfires or Mustangs.

No, but you could in a P-47. I have a soft spot for the P-40 too Jim, I just like the early versions over the later ones.

Personally, I'd like to see something new. Possible Black Anodized metal with blue or purple neon in the wheel wells.

Re: How about a pre war P-40???

I did a little digging on the initial P 40 weapon setups and was surprised at one of the armament combinations I found. I was familiar with the initial P-40 variant with two .50 caliber machine guns in the nose, and also familiar with P-40B with two .50 caliber machine guns in nose with two .30 caliber machine guns in each wing for total of six machine guns. I found reference regarding the Model H-81 that had armament layout of two .50 caliber machine guns in nose with a single .30 caliber machine gun in each wing for total of four machine guns. I had not recalled seeing any pictures of this P-40 variant before, so I had to do some digging to see what I could turn up. I found such a picture in one of my aircraft reference books I have had since I was probably 5 or 6 (Actually it was my fathers book, but I spent tons of time looking through it as a kid). Book is United States Military Aircraft Since 1909 by F.G. Swanborough and it had just the picture I was looking for, a early P 40 variant (Pre P-40B) with a four gun configuration. I have had the book for years, but had not noticed it until now.

Re: How about a pre war P-40???

^^^ Nice research, CC. The P-40 is one of my favorite prewar / early war planes. The JAAF thought these planes were Spitfires during early Flying Tiger confrontations, due in part to the FT working in cooperation with British Buffalos. The Japanese admired the speed of the "Spitfire". Thanks of course to Chennault's dive and fight tactics.

CC you just gave me a thought and before it gets lonely and goes away I thought I would post it.

How about the CU with the underwing cannon set up, that would be different.

Shawn , if Curtis had stuck with the radial and developed it instead of giving in to the military and going with the lesser powered inlines there would have been a Curtis Tbolt.
