| Re: New Fokker Triplanes for 2007 Yes, Starman, I often wonder if this is a "chicken-or-the-egg" problem, i.e. are brands not making WW I subjects because they won't sell, or aren't they selling because nobody makes them? I know I'm very interested in that era, just as much as in the others. Your list covered a lot of potential material. I mean, a Sopwith Camel seems like a must to me, for example. Or the Fokker D. VII. And yes, the price has to be right. Carousel One asks the same price for their Dr.1 as for their Fw-190D. To me, that's bad marketing for two reasons: one, this subject has been done before and is readily available (and big-dog Corgi's getting into the action on that one too) at lower prices. Two, it's just not as appealing a subject for the average collector, particularly at that price. I don't discriminate by era, but many do, and they tend to go WW II or later rather than earlier. Supply and demand. Anyway, just my two cents... FVD | |||||||||||||

| Re: New Fokker Triplanes for 2007 Starman and FormerViperDriver, I suspect that WWI birds will never sell nearly as well as WWII planes. Part of it is exposure. Few WWI airplanes are flying, and the photographic record of those birds is slim. With WWII you had the American propoganda machine working overtime to ingrained the planes (P-40, P-51 and B-17) and pilots (Boyington, Yeager, et.al.) in the minds of youth everywhere. That legacy has carried over. (After all, the Captain Whatever and the Worlds of Tomorrow he flew a P-40, not a Spad or Jenny.) Also, there are still plenty of WWII veterans around, as well as their planes, to keep them in the minds of the public. The WWII veterans got the moniker of "The Greatest Generation" the WWI veterans got the moniker "Doughboys". Not much of a contest as to which stands out more. WWI was not in the era of radio, films and music, while WWII was. All those things combined make the P-51 the "Ultimate" U.S. fighter in the minds of the public and the Spad XIII the answer to a bar bet. | |||||||||||||

| Re: New Fokker Triplanes for 2007 I think part of it also might be that taking something which was made of wood and fabric and then rendering it in diecast metal kind of loses something in the translation...I like the old biplanes, but they just don't seem quite right in cold, hard metal to me....Help me to get over this, somebody..... (on second thought,don't....I need some limitations) A Stearman would work though! | |||||||||||||
