Re: Focke-Wulf Fw190D-11 "Red 4"

Hello Cardinal, I bought the Boyington P40. Its the heaviest piece of diecast I have for its size. Its a very nice model but I am biased I suppose. I like the 1/48 scale it proves the theory that the smaller the scale the more the proportions are distorted. The 1/48 P40 really brings out the look of the P40 better than the 1/72 scale.
At the moment the heat is on over here, I have been accused of taking over the house with my hobby!!!!!!
Feathers have been ruffled I am afraid. it looks like I will have to spoil her for a while.

I am sure you will enjoy the P40 , once again thank you for the hot tip about the Dora. one each sounds good to me.

Well Jim, I received my Caldwell P40 (Carousel 1/48) and it is a fine piece of die-cast that displays well together with the Schroer desert Bf109 . Only fault is that the guns have been fitted strangely as the 'hole' alignment in the one wing appears to have been drilled unevenly - nothing serious though (I must admit that I'm not a great fan of the 'rubber' guns and prefer the 'metal' approach from FM).

(I must mention that the P40 is just not my favourite aircraft, although it is reasonably good looking in a rugged 'chunky/ugly' kind of way ... ).

I always liked the P-40, it appeared in every military history book I devoured when I was first getting into history (1976 or thereabouts).

The P-40 was there for us when we needed something, right now... my hat's off to it for just that reason.

Hi Cardinal, P40 not your favourite tut tut! To be honest its not my number one, the Spitfire is and always will be number one for me. However the P40 is a close second. I agree with your comments about the P40. but thats part of its charm I think. The history of the plane and the pilots that flew them, all adds up to an amazing episode in aviation. China, Pacific and the dessert, these beauties got down and dirty before the Mustang was even a twinkle in daddies eye.
Aircraft like the Mustang and Spitfire overshadow the often unglamorous and lesser know planes. The P40, Hurricane and Wildcat are often overlooked by those who should know better. Without these workhorses things would have been a lot different. They held the fort so to speak while the more famous planes came onto the scene.
As to the rubber guns Cardinal I hate the things but i can live with them because they dont spoil the overall look of the models.
Now I am off to look at the dessert Bf109!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder if Triccy has one on his site?

God Bless America.

Re: Focke-Wulf Fw190D-11 "Red 4"

All you hotrods who are ready to jump to 1:48, be forwarned; they take up room at a rapacious rate. I should kinow snce I have 26 of them in my hanger. I switched to 1:72 when I realized that all the flat surfaces in the living room where full of big, beautiful models. So, my advice to you is this: Find a blackboard and some chalk and write the following 500 times: "1:48 diecast models take up too much room". When you're finished, go take a cold shower.

1/48 may take up more room but they are appropriate for the more discerning collector . As space is usually at a premium, 1/48 scale forces one to be more selective and takes away the need to buy just about everything you like (i.e. 1/48 actually saves you money) - 1/72 seem to 'breed' and end up looking like a colony of designer ants .

(Now, when it comes to Dragon Armor, that's an entirely different matter ....)

The Carousel 1/48 Bf 109 is a great model Jim. If you are planning to get the Schroer (desert) version you should also get the Caldwell P40 for historical reasons as these two aces (not necessarily aircraft) were in combat against one another over the desert.
