Bird Strike!!!! RAAF F-111C

This is the bird-strike that took place Fri 11Apr 2008 at approx 3000ft in Queensland Australia.

Both engines went out - right engine due to bird bits ingestion, left engine
due to fibreglass from smashed radome. The crew managed to relight the starboard engine
to 80-85% power and left engine to idle. The ingested bird was a large pelican - hence the mess!!

The crew then flew the aircraft back from Evans Head Range to Amberley Air
Force Base (in excess of 30mins flight time) with no barometric airspeed or
altitude information. The aircraft has GPS and radar altimeter to provide
similar information. A great piece of flying i'd say & no doubt a large dry cleaning bill by the crew!!

Must have been a decent size bird.

You know, looking at the pix made me realize that we really do need an F-111 in diecast.
Oh yeah, cool bit of flying by the crew.

CRIKEY,

That is some bird strike, the crew deserve a round of drinks or two for getting the plane back safe.

Those boys certainly have my respect.

God Bless America.

Re: Bird Strike!!!! RAAF F-111C

Kudos to the crew for getting themselves, and their plane, back home.
Hate to think what would have happened had the bird struck the windshield instead of the radome...
