Three people killed in Reno this week, and the gentleman killed at Oceana last week...sounds like the FAA might want to call for a "safety stand down" for a day...

Re: Two Planes Collide at Reno Air Races

I am horrified and saddened. It has been a horrible year for the airshow/air race community.

Indecision is the key to flexibilty.
Flexibility is the key to airpower.
Indecision is therefore the key to Airpower.

I'm talking about nationwide for a day...way too many accidents seem to be happening.

Yes, there are too many accidents. But I don't see the point of shutting it down nationwide. Shutting it down at Reno for a day or two could make some sense.

Each of the three fatal accidents in Reno involved a different class of planes. In order they were: biplanes, jets and forumla ones (which are lower powered prop monoplanes). The first accident was caused by engine failure. The second by flying too close to another jet's exhaust. It appeared to my non-expert eyes from the stands that the jets at the time of the acccident were flying much too fast, much too close and much too low. The third occurred as a result of a collision. One pilot died and the other was injured.

Well, the accidents are happening at other places, too. Let's not forget the Oceana accident and Steve Fossett's disappearance, within the last few weeks.

I don't know about the details of the single accident at Oceania, but Fossett's disappearance had nothing to do with racing. He was scouting a place for a location to use in his adventures when he went down.

I understand what you're saying- that most of the recent accidents were related to air races/air shows. But, my point is this- there have been too many accidents recently, period. Fossett's disappearance, while not related to an air race, is still a cause for concern. If someone of his experience can go down, anyone can. All I'm saying is that it might be a good idea for the general aviation community to take a day off and evalute the way they do things. They can take a clue from the military on this one. If the aircraft involved in these accidents belonged to the military, there would already have been a stand down day to take a look at how we do things.
