For The 214 Blacksheep

I was checking out this site and found something for the 214 bunch.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhFbSrFxaYU

It's full of F4U Corsairs.

I have been told that in France & Mexico Volume 2 of the Blacksheep Squadron is out in DVD and yet we don't have it here

Re: For The 214 Blacksheep

Aah, Pappy and his blacksheep boys! Bring's back a lot of nostalgic memories... Seems like there are some cool 'fly-by' scenes of F-4Us playing support roles in the new movie: "Flags of our Fathers". I'm looking forward to seeing it, if not for those Corsairs.

Re: For The 214 Blacksheep

Love the show. Believe it or not, there was a former VMF -214 pilot that lived at the end of my street. He said that certain things on the show were not right (obviously), but a lot were. He said that Conrad played Boyington to a tee. He was a very nice guy, but he liked to drink, gamble, and wrestle. That is where I got the autographed photo from Boyington. This Gentleman had it in his collection. He got it in person, so I am going to assume it is real.

Re: For The 214 Blacksheep

I loved this show when I was a kid. I remember seeing a show on History channel (or Military channel, I forget which) about VMF-214. They interviewed a Blacksheep pilot who said that the only thing that was historically accurate about the show were the following:
1. The commander was named "Boyington".
2. The squadron was VMF-214.
3. They flew Corsairs.

My mom didn't like me to watch the show of course. She thought the Blacksheep were bad role models. I don't think she ever understood that for me, it was only ever about the planes. Of course, I was only 12, and didn't care about historical accuracy like I do now, so I have a soft spot in my heart for it, and watch it whenever it's on.

Re: For The 214 Blacksheep

I have heard that as well about the show, but this guy said that alot of guys don't want to admitt what went on over there. I mean let's face it they really did steal another unit's number, aircraft and base. I am by no means saying the show is accurate, but there is more truth to it then a lot of people are saying.

Re: For The 214 Blacksheep

Well when i watched this a young teenager all i cared about back then was the nice looking F4U Corsairs that were on the show.
The first season of the show my father took me to Southern Calif and i met Frank Tallman who was one of the Corsair stunt pilots for the show and was on the set and saw the F4U Corsairs and that got me hooked to this plane.
I was even trying to find the actors on the set and saw none that day...Oh well...But when i saw the Corsairs i remember one them had canon like guns on the wigns not like the other Corsairs had and Frank told me that was a F4U 7 that flew in France i think it was.On a sad note Frank Was killed in a flying accident a few years later.
But in my Fathers library he has a signed picture of the Blacksheep Corsairs (tv show) flying together and Frank signed it for him.

Re: For The 214 Blacksheep

I recommend reading

"Once they were Eagles" by Frank Walton

and

"Black Sheep: The Definitive Account of Marine Fighting Squadron 214 in World War II" by Bruce Gamble

for the REAL story of VMF-214.

Re: For The 214 Blacksheep

I got the t.v. series on DVD last year for Christmas I believe from amazon. Not too bad but I prefer the movie over the series. Flying Misfits
