Re: Travis AFB open house this weekend

Pappy, can you estimate how far away the flightline was from the place you stood?
When I compare your pictures with mine from any european air show, it looks like that you guys are allowed much closer to the A/C then we are

Well, I was on the flightline -- right up against the ropes as close to the action as you are allowed to get, that's how we define flightline over here ..... as for the "flight box" where all the flying takes place that's tough to call. I'm terrible at estimating distance I think. Plus, I do crop my in-flight images quite a bit -- as much as my 300mm lens will allow and still retain image quality. I can post a couple uncropped images later if that would help.

This site has some cool diagrams of the typical show layout: Information About Airshows In General

I'd say 100 yards for the jets, closer for props as they are allowed to peform a bit close than the jets? Might be able to google a better answer as I'm sure I was only as close as allowed by the letter of the law, stateside, which may be different than overseas???

Sorry can't be more exact!

Be careful now or you will start to lose your hearing....It's fun to be up close too...Did you get to talk to the pilots when they were done ?
After the shows they will come over and talk with the fans and sign pictures and etc.

This sort of links with the thread about how to get youngsters interested in the hobby , what better way than to actually be able to talk to the pilots.

when I was a youngster I met a pilot that was a relative of my neighbours, I just stood there speechless , but thinking WoW a real pilot wow.
I could not wait for school so I could tell my friends I had met a real live pilot ,,,,,,and he even spoke to me!!!!
I have never forgotten that day.

Ooops sorry folks just a little off topic.

God Bless America.

I didn't fight the crowds of kids and parents fighting for autographs, no, but it is cool how they do this and it is a bit of a rockstar mob scene... I did, however, have an interesting conversation with an F-15 crewchief that was not looking forward to an upcoming transition to the F-22.... not at all happy about it from a maintenance standpoint, and he indicated the pilots weren't too stoked either.

Hmmmm, wonder why I snapped this one....
