Oceana Air Show - Anybody going?

I was thinking about going to the airshow at Oceana next weekend, Sep 7-9. I have never been to an airshow so I am looking forward to it. I have two young boys that will hopefully enjoy it as well.

See you there.

Wear a hat, take sunscreen and bring lightweight folding chairs (the kind that you carry around in a nylon tube bag). You can get 'em cheap at Wally World if you don't already have any...You'll thank me for this advice later.

Enjoy the show. I'll be at the NAS Brunswick,ME airshow the following week.

...oh, and don't forget your camera, as we require pics.

Re: Oceana Air Show - Anybody going?

Have been going to this airshow since 1981. A great show in the old days of multiple aircraft types stationed together. Still a must see airshow. Try to arrange an extra day or so to visit some of the great museums in the area. Up in Hampton, about 40 minutes away there is a good outdoor/indoor static display on Mercury Blvd. Just down the road is the Virginia Air Museum and Langley AFB. Visit Norfolk NAS and take the tour, .... great to see some carriers up close and personal... you will also see an F-8 on display. Don't forget all the gate guardians at NAS Oceana. Lots to do and see down there.

I would also suggest bringing some foam earplugs for the family. The Super Hornet is LOUD!
And, enjoy the show! Oceana always puts on a good one.

P.S. If you're looking for some good eats afterwards, I recommend Jake's Smokehouse Bar-B-Q on General Booth Blvd. Not too far from the base, and the food is always excellent. That's where I eat whenever I'm in that section of town. You won't leave hungry!

Don't forget sunglasses all that white concrete down there sure does add a lot of glare,

Good call on the shades, smartd! I forgot about the concrete glare at the base.
One other thing I would suggest- leave some wriggle room in your schedule after the show. Depending on where you park at, it may be some time before you can clear the base- lots and lots of traffic at these shows.

Yep, I always hang around for an hour or so getting detail shots and watching the crews at work just to stay out of traffic.

Here is a couple of shots of the Oceana ramp during an airshow in the 90's
