[Spinnaker]

Over the last weekend I attended the "Wings Over Wairarapa" (pronounced why-rah-rap-a) airshow, held at Hood Aerodrome, in Masterton, New Zealand. Unfortunately, I experienced camera problems. But here are a few pics that my wife took during the show which will give you some idea of the aircraft that were there.

Your wife takes great pics Spinnaker.

That looks like a fine assortment of vintage iron (and cloth and fabric). Its nice to know the land of LOTR is defended by such a collection. The Corsair certainly has a nice livery, as does the Aussie P-40N. I'm curious about the history of that Chinese P-40E.

I am trying to find a link for you, with no luck at present. But the Chinese one is actually an ex-RNZAF P-40E painted up in the colours of the Flying Tigers. The other (in the Aussie scheme) was recovered from New Guinea by an joint Australian/New Zealand group, and was restored to flying condition here in NZ.

Incidently, the F4U Corsair is actually an ex-RNZAF FG-1, currently painted in USN scheme (Big Hog), although it has been displayed in an RNZAF scheme previously.

The show was awesome - well worth the trip. There were lots of highlights for me: -
- the sound of the Merlin as the P-51D Mustang flew over
- seeing the two DH Vampires in the air
- the Corsair
But probably the most impressive sight was the little Polikarpov in flight - the guy flying it was throwing it around the sky, performing some amazing moves!

I'm planning on going to the Classic Fighters show at Easter weekend (Classic Fighters Marlborough 2007) - can't wait for that :-)

I read about this upcoming Easter airshow in Classic Wings Magazine (classicwings.com) and it looks like it will be truly spectacular ...
