1250ships,
Hey there.

Don't apologize for mixing and matching planes and figures. This is what these glorified toys were made for.

Great diorama. Thanks for sharing the pictures.

Re: On the deck of USS Lexington 1941

That is a neat looking dio.. Now just get another 15-20 pieces and make a flight deck..

I don't think I can afford another 15 sets at $60-$70 a pop! I seem to remember a discussion on the old board about buying just the base part but the feeling was it would cost $35 or $40 separately and interest dropped off after that. Must say it is a solid piece of whatever it is made of. Heavy.

An interesting alternative would be to build a deck out of wood. There are some people selling laser cut wooden flight decks for 1/350 scale ship models. Perhaps I can get them to do some 1/72 decking. Would look nifty with a deck load of US Navy aircraft.

At some point I should photograph the Corsair that came with the darn thing. When I get my Swordfish I'll pair her up with the Gladiator and take some pictures.

Yeah very nice. It would also be cool to see a Doolittle B-25 on it.

I can take umbrage, I can take the cake, I can take the A-Train, I can take two and call me in the morning, but I cannot take this sitting down. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take five.

I'd like to get a Doolittle B-25. Not in the budget right now with two Swordfish coming. Someone else told me the Easy Model FW 190 I picked up was from the cover squadron for Galland's Me 262 unit. So now I'm seriously thinking I need a Galland Me 262.

Was the Corgi Doolittle raid B-25 well done? That was before my collecting time.

Yeah it is very nice. I have the Franklin Mint Ruptured Duck in my collection, but the Doolittle is nice.

Re: On the deck of USS Lexington 1941

Thanks for the pictures. I wanted to check up on the tail guns so Googled up some photos. Looks to me like there are at least a couple of problems with the plane and the paint scheme. Most glaring is the paint scheme. It should be uniform olive drab. I can see how Corgi decided to go with that scheme because it is the one on the plane in the US Air Force museum. But all the photographs of the planes on the Hornet show a uniform color without the light underside. The plane on display is not the proper B-25B but is a B-25D model converted by North American in 1952 for the exhibit. (Another source says 25th aniversary which would have been 1967).

The tail gun setup does not look right to my eyes but it is hard to tell exactly (see attached photo). Also the glass nose and cockpit glass appears to be wrong when compared to the photos. Corgi has painted over glass that should be clear.

Given all that not sure if I'll buy one or not. On the other hand I'm likely to find another Doolittle B-25 in 1/72 from anyone else....

Re: On the deck of USS Lexington 1941

Well I will give you what I know. The paint scheme on the Doolittle B-25's were standard Od over gray (like the model). The only thing different in the paint scheme was the fact that Doolittle ordered the prop hubs painted black (at thattime they were still natural metal) so that they wouldn't glare. The tail guns varied, as they were not real, but broom sticks. It was up to each crew to decide how to do their tail. Some crews (such as Doolittle's) went as far as to paint tracks to make it look like the guns could elevate. The B-25 on display in the Air Force Museum is a D model that North American restored in the 1950's for the museum. North American took the aircraft apart, and actually took everything off that made it a D, and put te windows in place for a B model. Our B-25 is exact to what Doolittle's aircraft looked like. That comes from a Doolittle Raider that I spoke to at the museum one Sunday morning. I tend to believe him--he was there. Remember that these B-25's were part of bomb groups prior to going on the raid, so they had the typical paint scheme that would be worn at that time.

Here is a rather crude pic of a Doolittle raider B-25, but on the right engine cowling you can see the gray camo.
