Well best is certainly the Dragon. Optional position canopy, landing gear, and flaps... What more do ya want? For it to cook ya all breakfast!

Though aside from those points I have many Corgi 51's that are very nice. The lack of these optional positions make them far less real looking though.

I just opened my Big B Doll and I love the detail, but the Canaopy does not fit correctly and falls off, plus if you slide it, it comes off. As I played with that the right flap fell off, I would rather have a solid slightly less detailed Witty, I just got my P-51 Stinker Pat from Witty today and it is perfect. Nothing falls off when you handel it, clear canopy and a pilot. Plus under $19.00.

Re: Need info on 1/72 - comparisons please

I assembled a Waldemar Wubke FW190D today and must say that it is an exceptional model after you get past the frustration of assembling it!

All I can say is that every time I go through the very painful process of putting a Dragon together the more I appreciate Corgi and HobbyMaster. The HM Dauntless in particular is growing on me to the point that I've ordered another one and am also planning to buy their first Stuka (instead of the Dragon counterpart).

You guys who complain about Draggin's fiddly bits and get all misty-eyed over Corgi's "straight out 'o the box" solidness have obviously never had the pleasure of attaching the landing gear to any of their F-4s or B-52s......

Re: Need info on 1/72 - comparisons please

I have to agree with most of the fellas here. Dragon Models seems to have the best casting. It's not just that the detail is better, it's the casting accuracy and fit n' finish too. All that being said, I have a very warm spot in my heart for Corgi. I have and will continue to purchase every single piece that they come out with. I'll explain why.

I consider Corgi a collectible and the others just models.

  1. They are, IMHO, the only brand that has shown true monetary appreciation. Show me a Dragon, Hobby Master, or another brand that has as many pieces that resell over $100.00 (not that I would sell).
  2. They don't flood the market. You actually have time between the releases to get excited about your next purchase. I love new releases as much as the next guy, but there is a lot to be said for anticipation.
  3. They are just about the only ones that give us printed catalogs each year.
  4. Bombers! If you want to collect anything other than fighters, you've got to go Corgi. No one else has them.
  5. They have the best special issues. I would give Dragon some credit here for the whole cyberhobby thing, but that was/is a complete debacle. The dog bowl has to be the biggest let down I've ever experienced (I would have bought them all).

I can't believe I'm doing this, but I've just ordered a Witty P-51D. I ordered the "Jumpin Jaques P-51D from the 3rd ACG, 3rd FS. I like the markings and the actual model looks pretty accurate. The gear down only option isn't a problem. I still am uneasy about the "sparkle" silver paint and of course the god-awful pilot. If anyone has a Witty Mustang, can you tell me if the canopy comes off easily so I can remove the pilot.

Hi folks, I have just bought my first Witty model. Its the Limited edition OFMC MK1X Spitfire. I bought it purely because it is based on the Spitfire the late great Ray Hanna owned. It flys out of Duxford in the UK. I would not have bought it but for that fact. The model is not bad and has some fine detail in some areas but lacking in others. Its a bit toy like, overall it is not that accurate. It also appears to have some sort of slipper tank fitted!!!!!! It was also a bit pricey but as the profits go to keep the original old bird flying I dont mind that at all. It has wheels down only option and no pilot and thats OK with me. If you want models of stuff thats still flying today and with lots of history then go ahead and buy it. Because of the Ray Hanna connection it will be at the front of my display cabinet. Also it has the most twirly prop of any model I have ,one blow and it twirls for ages. Yes I know I need help!! ( Ray was the founder and leader of the Red Arrows display team).

Thanks Skunkie, knew I could count on you for a thought-provoking solution. Hammer is right on my workbench if the firecracker idea doesn't work out. And of course there is always our last resort - using your head!

I'll have the pleasure soon enough as I've got an F4 on order . I have experienced the pain of trying to attach the landing gear on their P51Ds and gave up in disgust after snapping off the edge that fits into the wheel well 'socket' - both are now flying in formation .
