1/48 Scale - Is this the beginning of a WW I diecast "Golden Age"?

I mainly collect 1/72 WW II fighters, but have a strong interest in WW I aviation. I have all the Postage Stamp WW I releases. These are generally 1/63 scale or thereabouts. No rigging and limited detail.

This era's planes are better suited to 1/48 scale, and I do have three "Legends in Flight" Hallmark 1/48 models I received as gifts. Guynemer and "Smith IV" SPAD XIIIs and the "Red Baron" Triplane. Other than these models, I've pretty much ignored 1/48 scale WW I offerings up to this point as either too costly or lacking certain detail.

Corgi's entry into this market has sparked my interest. I have ordered up an example each of Corgi's SE5a, Camel, SPAD, and Albatros DV. I've also ordered two Carousel models, the Baracca Nieuport 11 and the Voss Dr.1, to see if these planes are worth the cost delta.

WW I appears to be fertile ground for both the collector and the manufacturer. Between Corgi and Carousel, we have new castings presenting seven different types in 1/48 scale, although Carousel's Nieuport 17 is a movie livery. (Hopefully Carousel will issues an historical livery for the 17.)

What is the overall interest in these models? There are so many possible liveries with just these seven castings, let alone the possibilities of new castings in the future, it has me quite excited! Is there enough collectors interest to support these manufacturers' push into WW I and encourage them to expand the available castings?

New casting possibilities are numerous. My wish list includes the Sopwith Pup, Sopwith Triplane, Dolphin, Snipe, SPAD VII, DH 2, Fokker Eindecker, Fokker DVII, Nieuport 28 and I haven't even mentioned 2-seaters.

But if they make them, will people come?

Be nice if somebody would put out some pusher props like the DH 2 and the F.E. 2b. Two seaters would be great too. Sure would like a Bristol F.2B, Hannover CL.III, and a Halberstadt CL.II. There is definitely a bunch of untouched territory with regards to the WWI era.

While there are a number of very interesting WWI aircraft---including bombers and float planes as well as fighters---that I would consider buying if made in sensible scales ( fighters in 1:48, bigger planes in 1:72 ), I doubt that there are enough collectors who know enough about WWI--or care to- to support a major initiative in this category. Just look at the posts in this forum and, especially, the various quizzes, and the trend seems inexorable. Time is marching on and even WWII is starting to wane in terms of our collective interest.
