One to consider

Don't know if anyone has ever bought one of the Italeri 1/72ish AH-64D Longbows, but they're pretty nice! They had a good amount of metal, the heft is very good, detail is on par with Corgi as well as finish and the best thing was the price........2 for $25.00 on Ebay! They come in U.S. Army and UK liveries. My only complaint (and it's minor) is there are exposed screw holes on the underside. Overall, pretty nice and the only 1/72 Apache out there!

Take a look.

Re: One to consider

I have the U.S. Army one. I do think it is one of my better models.

I repainted the yellow parts to fit the surrounding colors. I think the stand is probably the best stand in my collection, too. I bought mine for $40 earlier this year.

Andrew, I think they've been around for at least a couple of years. I had been eyeballing one at my local hobby shop until I saw the deal on Ebay. They seemed kinda large for 1/72 but when I did a comparison to a 1/72 scale model they had in the shop it was pretty spot on.

I think there is a US Army version being offered on Ebay right now for $19.99 Buy It Now from Ebay Store Deep Discount Hobbies and Toys. Not too bad of a price as my local hobby store sells this one for $40.00.

Re: One to consider

That post made me hunt one out on ebay, didn't get the 2 for 25 deal, but found one for 20, and it came to 26.95 with shipping. Also won the Corgi Iraq 2003 Blackhawk for 20.00, so today's Army aviation is well covered now...just need an unarmed Chinook. Have to say these things look pretty good, the paint may not be spot on as the OD the Army uses seems to be closer to black these days, though that's probably a function of its anti IR properties. Another thing I saw in Osprey's Apache Units book is the fact that the South Carolina Army National Guard repainted their Apaches in a low vis gray scheme, with some help from the USMC at Cherry Point. Apparantly the low vis gray makes the helos harder to spot, which is an advantage in the current operational scenario. Witnesses have said USMC cobras virtually disappear from view during their assault runs, which may be one of the other reasons why the Corps have lost fewer Cobras then the army has lost Apaches....despite the better survivability of the latter.

This was the subject of a prior post about helo losses, and tactics, the Marines remembered Vietnam era helo tactics while the Army forgot...going more for the European scenario with their stopping to fire missiles, rather than going balls in and out against their targets.

Actually I heard from a Cobra pilot that the reason they didn't have losses was that the Cobra can fire its armaments and move at the same time which means they never stood still. Apaches have to stop to fire hellfires.
