Re: AIRCRAFT: Best 1:72 P-40 mold?

Well, I voted for the Corgi P-40E with the FOV P-40B/C coming in close second. The only thing I noticed lacking in details on the FOV P-40 is
one by the canopy rail area (look closely and tell me what's wrong with it) and also missing the C-shape hinge on the upper rudder. Other than
that, it's my second P-40 mould I liked best.

Re: AIRCRAFT: Best 1:72 P-40 mold?

That is a really hard one for my to answer because the Matchbox P-40 is pretty darn good.
The Corgi one is not bad either.
Because you have a choice for gear down on your plane i would pick
Corgi.

Re: AIRCRAFT: Best 1:72 P-40 mold?

I put in my vote for the FOV P-40B.

Corgi certainly gives us better peripherals, like number of liveries and packaging, but as far as the mould goes, Forces of Valor's new bird cannot be beat.

Anything for a weird life.

You surprise me djeffhall, I would have thought you would go with the Corgi P40E.
I think you have been seduced by the sleeker nosed B. I agree those early P40s look very cool.
The FOV is very good and I have no complaints apart from the holes for the fixing screws under the wings and that the cockpit is a little too high in relation to the actual aircraft.
At first sight I thought FOV had made a major mistake with the canopy but when I checked it looks to be perfect its just the distance between wing root and the bottom of the canopy that is slightly too great.
The Matchbox examples are also good and its difficult to fault them.
I think I have to give first place to the Corgi effort, good finish and body panels are spot on.

However I must add that the differences are so small that its almost a dead heat between the three.
So, Corgi first but FOV and Matchbox in very close joint second.

IXO ? Ok lets be gentle with this one, my model has a problem first of all with the gaps at the wing root, way too big, plus the paintwork is semi gloss and off shade. The Sharks teeth I think were way off, panel lines too heavy. Plus a few other problems but then its an IXO but then I payed very little for this so I can live with it plus its a different mark so that makes it a must have for a P40 collector.

I wish Corgi would put more effort into the fine detail, eg, the engine the pilot figure and maybe prop detail. oh and how about an antenna If Corgi did that they would have won outright.

FlyXwire, you have a keen eye, yup the rudder is wrong! The rail for the canopy is hmmmm well on the real thing it does stand out strongly my problem is that the few line drawings I have are somewhere up in the loft so I cannot give the model a really close coat of looking at.
Its funny but the one good photo I have to hand shows the tail wheel facing forward. (FVD please note).

God Bless America.

I voted for the FOV. Love the engine detail!

Re: AIRCRAFT: Best 1:72 P-40 mold?

Jim,
Hey there sir.

Well, I'm glad that I haven't become completely predictable in my old age.

I do LOVE the Corgi P-40's, don't get me wrong. Other than the black and orange bird, I've got them all (Yes, I'll probably break down and get the Stud even if its errors irk me,) and have 4 of them here on the desk next to me.

However, that open engine cowling and the fact that FOV's bird represents a flyer from Delaware (Which I called home for about 15 years) won me over.

Does that mean that I will not pick up every Corgi bird? Hell no, I'm getting them all and loving everyone of them!

Anything for a weird life.
