Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

I understood that perfectly. But my point is some of us don't care about market value. We care about the non-monetary value the model has for us personally, and that's worth something, right? It's a different kind of value, that's all...

Now, if one of my models reaches a market value of $10,000, I might start to look at it a different way, I suppose.

This seems to be a well debated issue. I know that I don't buy these things to supplement my 401K, but market value is very important to me. I have thousands of dollars invested in my collection and I'd like to think that it's at least worth what I paid for it. Personal appreciation and market value are two totally different things, but not opposing forces. It's not about one versus the other. They are two complementary attributes that everyone places their own value on. Some of you don't care about market value, swell. However, some of us do.

Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

Personally, I keep my boxes for storage and for moving. I cannot display all my models at once, so I rotate them. I also have moved several times since I began collecting and I really don't want my planes slamming around the inside of a big cardboard moving box. Now that I have settled down, the box is much less important to me, but I like to keep it for storage.

I agree that the box can have a huge impact on collector value. I also collect Lionel trains and firearms, and I can tell you that sometimes the fact that the box is present can double the value to a collector. Sometimes the box can be worth more than the object itself! The condition of the box also has an impact.

However, I buy what I want to keep and don't buy as an "investment", so the box is only important to me as a functional container. I won't buy a model off the bay unless it has the box, but only because of shipping issues (see my comment on moving).

And Skunky, please stop fiddling with your propeller!

Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

I do not really buy with any intention of selling a making a profit, but I figure my kids might someday (after I've kicked the bucket), so I do keep the boxes, except I have not kept all of my FOV or MRC BOXES.

Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

We should also conduct a survey to find out how many people like to twirl the propellers on their diecast warbirds.....and if so, how many hours a week on average would they say they spend twirling their propellers?

I never twirl mine , ever.

I NEVER twirl the propellers on MY diecast...I'm too busy twirling the props of Skunky's diecast in his climate controlled warehouse!

Yes, Skunky I do 'twirl' my propeller when I'm in the mood. No, I throw away just the fugly boxes.

Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

I get a new plane, take it out to look it over and enjoy it for a few minutes, then promptly place it back in its box. I don't drool over the box or read it over and over. I've got a six foot tall pile right next to my cabinet where all my models sit. Now if I buy a model and do a custom job on it, the box is pretty useless so it gets a free truck ride to the recycling center in town. So much for high quality cardboard.

I don't buy for collectibility or resale. If I did that, I'd have a bunch of models I couldn't stand (Spitfires - yeeeccchh) as those seem to be the ones holding market value. I'll take my P-40s, Corsairs, and Mustangs even if they don't resell for what I paid for them. They make me happy. Leave me alone! I'm playing with my toys!. twirlllll, twirlllllll

Exactly right, and that's fine. But the point of my first post on that subject is that some collectors seem derisive of those of us who don't care much about market value (as when someone throws the box away), as if we were too ignorant to figure it out. No, it's just that we truly don't care. It is a conscious, deliberate decision (in the vast majority of cases, in any event) and it doesn't make us less of a collector. Just a different type of collector, maybe (but I seem to be in the majority, based on other posts in this thread and others).

Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

What is great about this hobby is that there is no right or wrong. If you like to keep them all, you can. If you like to pitch the boxes, then you are free to do that. I have kept some of my boxes. Mainly the ones that are really nice boxes, or high end models. All of my GMP's, EI's, some Corgi's. But that is about it. I collect for myself, and my collection is special. The models in it are of planes that I have actually worked on or flew, or have a special story to go with it. Some are nothing more than I really liked it, or I was somewhere special and got the model. My Corgi B-17 " Bit O Lace was purchased literally minutes after I climbed out of flying "Fuddy Duddy" at Oshkosh a few years ago. The paint schemes are close enough for me. After doing the interview with Bud Anderson, he signed my GMP Old Crow, I did the artice with Yeager and got a GMP of his plane signed as well. I could go on. I think really it is up to how you want to go about your collecting. I save some boxes here and there, but not all.
