Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

At this point, I have enough room to display almost all of my models so the boxes are being saved just in case I need to move at some point. As I acquire more (over the next few years) and run out of space, I will likely store some in their boxes and rotate my displays.

Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

I save most of my boxes but some are kinda a hard to save such as the Matchbox ones...At least to the Mint level.
You have cut the side of the plastic to get the plane out.I didn't like that too well.
Almost all of my boxes are in the attic in plastic tubs.

Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

New to diecast so kept every box but I prefer gear down display and then I discovered you had to glue them so that negates putting back in box.

Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

I've kept all my boxes except for a couple FOV ones I tore up while opening. Hopefully one day soon I'll be finally getting out of my parents house and it would make me real nervous to move those things without having them in the original packaging. Besides if one day I'm in desperate need of money and God forbid I have to sell my collection who's going to want it without the packages?

Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

Moving every 3-4 yrs requires that I keep the box. But what it looks like has nothing to do the purchase.

Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

I keep all my boxes. I swamp my birds and armor in and out of the house as I have limited room. It's like Christmas every few weeks when I discover another box in the garage I haven't seen for a few months....

Anything for a weird life.

Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

I wouldn't say that, mhackl. The model is worth something to the buyer. As amazing as it may seem, some of us actually couldn't care less about our models retaining their "value." I don't see my models as part of my retirement account. I buy them because I like airplanes (and tanks), and that's it.

I'm really fascinated by the fact that this appears to be a difficult concept for some to accept...

I think he's referring to market value and not the value to it's owner.

Exclamation Re: Do you keep your boxes ?

You'd be surprised how many people don't keep them. I've had customers walk in buy an item and remove it right then and there and ask us to toss the box for them. We usually attempt some sort of intervention. It just about makes you nauseous to witness it.

"Ok, change that production number from 2100 to 2099 because that model is now worthless"

Well, mhackl, next time someone does that with a 1/144 Corgi Vulcan, be sure to keep that box for me!

I understood that perfectly. But my point is some of us don't care about market value. We care about the non-monetary value the model has for us personally, and that's worth something, right? It's a different kind of value, that's all...

Now, if one of my models reaches a market value of $10,000, I might start to look at it a differrent way, I suppose.

I am a collector..
I buy planes not only for enjoyment, but also as an investment.. The boxes are an essential part of a plane retaining or increasing its value..
An example, I won a 1/72 "S" Sugar Lancaster on ebay (this plane's resell value is somewhere in the $200+ mark) I paid $68.00 for it, but it came without a box/cert., no stand and missing half its parts.. Luckily, I was able to aquire the parts I needed to complete the model, but without the box and the numbered certificate, it will never be worth more than I paid for it..
In the same respect, I bought a Flying Mule Me-262 and less than a year later, sold it for $200..
What this comes down to is that in the end, after I am dead and gone, my family could sell my collection and make a hefty profit from the sale rather than selling them for pennies at a garage sale.. My money isn't flushed down the toilet and I feel some self satisfaction that I am actually enjoying my hobby..
