Poll: Duplicates in your collection

Let's say a manufacturer releases a new mold of one of your favorite subjects. You already have this subject in the same scale by another manufacturer, but the new model is superior in quality, and is a reasonable price.

Re: Poll: Duplicates in your collection

I can't let anything go - even if I buy a replacement. I am slowly replacing all my $13 MB models with $30-40 HM and Corgi's - when my wife figures this out I will be in deep dutch!

Good question.

I think - for me - the key elements here (in the question) are "superior in quality" and "reasonable price."

Also for me, I just tend not to sell/get rid of old models - unless there is something I just really don't like about the model. I think I've only sold/traded 3 models ( a couple Dragons, and I traded a Matchbox Corsair - which now I kinda regret) since I got into this hobby.

Also, on rare occasions I will buy 2 of the same model. One to display and one to keep in the box (in case of "accident"/personal paranoia - that I would never be able to replace that model if something happened 10 years from now. Also to pass on to my son). I tend to do that with any 1:72 Tuskegee release and I did it with the FM exclusive Flying tigers P-40 as well as Corgi's Bong P-38. Also picked up duplicates of Corgi's "Marine's Dream becasue I just love that model and at $9.99 from TM - how can one go wrong?

DADoser nailed this one for me. I had the IXO G-2 Stuka for awhile until Hobby Master came out with a superior model. I paid roughly the same amount when
I first got the IXO Stuka. I will probably get rid of my MB NASA F-104 and F-100 sometime when HM comes out with theirs down the road. It will be a continual cycle of change (updates)
at least for me and where my collections is concerned.

Re: Poll: Duplicates in your collection

It's hard for me to resist superior quality. It's also hard for me to part with old models. I guess that answers the question...

But I guess in practice it would have to do with how much superior the quality is, compared to price (as pointed out by others).

Is it the same livery, too -- or just say a better P-51D from a new maker, such as Gemini Aces, for example? (Sorry, but I guess "subjects" is a bit vague to me -- could mean "P-51D" or "Old Crow P-51D")

If it's not the same livery, I'll simply buy from the new brand for future liveries I like. If it's the same livery, and I like that livery enough, I may try to dump the old one and replace it. But such evolution is pretty much unavoidable I think, so I pretty much concentrate on trying to add new liveries to my collection and retain the "outdated" molds, as I like to be alble to trace the progression of the hobby in my collection, too. (One reason why I hold on to my Speccast stuff, for example, that and the simple fact I'll lose my shirt selling it!)

Re: Poll: Duplicates in your collection

When I say "identical subject", I originally meant "identical planes, identical markings". For example, I have an MB Vraciu Hellcat, and HM will be releasing one shortly that would meet this criteria.

I would not consider a P-51B and a P-51D from the same pilot to be identical. If Gemini ever did an "Old Crow", I'd be all over it, as I enjoy collecting multiple mounts of the same pilot.

I buy and keep both. But I'm blessed to have a home in my home state of Texas and my wife's home state of Nevada. You can guess what I do with my favorite dupes.

Re: Poll: Duplicates in your collection

It depends. First off if theold one is special because of it's markings or where I got it, then it stays. If I bought the old one myself, and the new one has same markings scale and everything, then I will sell my old one. A good example of this is that I just recently sold my Corgi Big beautiful Doll, after I bought my GMP Big Beautiful Doll.
