| What's with all the freakin' polls, DADoser? I don't know. It seems like the traffic/discussion has slowed lately (to me anyway). Thought I'd throw these polls up to start some general discussion and see what happens. I also thought it would be interesting to see if the polling broke down as we all might expect it to or if there are any surprises. Additionally - as some company reps seem to view this forum, I thought this might give them a small slice of market research material as it applies to diecast collectors/hobbyists on our forum. I'd like to see us do some more of this ( as we already have with the "models you want" discussion). I think we could also figure out a way to "focus" these polls better in order to let diecast manufacturers know what we would really buy and in what quantities, etc.; etc. If the polls annoy you, then please, simply ignore them. Thanks for any replies added discussion you all bring to the poll threads. Take care - | |||||||||||||

I was a bit surprised at the utter domination of 1/72, Corgi, and WWII. I thought they would lead the polls, sure, but not by the overwhelming margins indicated here. The three categories may be related, though, since Corgi makes mostly 1/72 models, and is somewhat heavy on WWII subjects (though they do a good job covering other eras as well). FVD

| Re: What's with all the freakin' polls, DADoser? One thing that surpries me (not just about these recent polls, but ALL polls, even from the old Hangar) is how few folks actually register their opinion. I know the polls I just put up have only been up a couple days - but with 355 "active" members (of 567 total) - I'm suprised only around 50 (+ or -) have shared their perspective - especially after looking at the "viewed" totals. I would hope (or would think) that at least 100 members would respond to ANY poll here. (I'm sure more will respond as the week goes on - but I wonder how many more will respond.) I'm also curious - if the totals/percentages are truly representative of the forum - the only way to know though, is if MORE people respond(ed). Another thing that surprised me - so far - is the "inflight/gear down, runway poll. (Please read the following as my, personal passion for the hobby - not as me being judgemental or superior to someone with a different perspective.) For me, this hobby is all about the FLIGHT aspect - (military) history, aerial combat; pilots. My passion lies in the airplanes - Airplanes in flight. That's the whole purpose. If I wanted to display a model on wheels, I'd probably collect diecast cars - or collect primarily armor. Having said that - I do display a small portion of my collection gear down on the shelf. (Primarily for space consideration and the fact that those tend to be Corgi Legends w/ gear down only option) Again, for those that display the majority "gear down" - I'm not trying to judge you or your preference here. There is def. beauty in models displayed gear down - i.e. my Franklin Mint 1:48 Dauntless is GREAT! I'm just suprised that "how" folks display their airplane is divided about 50/50. I just thought that the percentage would be higher for the gear-up/in-flight option - maybe 70/30???. Also - I thought that there might be higher numbers for 1:48 and 1:44 scales. (Figured 1:72 would dominate - but not THAT overwhelming.) | |||||||||||||

| Re: What's with all the freakin' polls, DADoser?
DADoser, I think a lot of us don't like the artificiality of the stands themselves, even when they are not too conspicuous (which is rarely the case). I've see plenty of aircraft on the ground, and my models look just like that (in fact, aircraft spend the vast majority of their time on the ground). On the other hand, I have never seen an operational aircraft tethered to the ground with a pedestal (I've seen them at museums and airbase gates). In fact, the vast majority of aircraft dioramas are "on the ground," and I think it's tied to the reason above. Bottom line: stands are too much of an artificial prop for a lot of us. I use them for convenience only, to increase the number of models I can display on one shelf, or when I have no choice (Matchbox). FVD

| Re: What's with all the freakin' polls, DADoser? DADoser, Hey there. RE: Utter domination - I'm not surprised myself at the utter domination, if only, as you very accuarately state, Corgi has put out more 1:72 WWII planes. This being primarily due to the fact that they have been active the longest. Perhaps the next poll should be worded something like this. If each manufaturer made the same number of planes in each scale (1:144, 1:72. 1:48 and 1:32) and the same number of planes in each of the major eras (WWI, WWII, cold war, Vietnam, modern) which ERA and scale would you own the most of? This might give you a more accurate representation of what people WANT, versus what people are OFFERED by the manufacturers. After all, Corgi by far dominates my collection, but given my choice, I'd purchase FAR more Hobby Master and Gemini. I like their planes more than Corgis but Corgi has ben at it longer and made far more models than anyone else. Also, while my collection would still be primarily WWII oriented, I'd own a lot more Cold War birds than I do now. I think that Vietnam and Modern Era planes would be far more popular if they were equally produced. Not as popular as WWII, but more than is currently represented. | |||||||||||||
