Carrier Air Groups

We are starting to get some critical mass in 1/72 of carrier based airframes. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to display the aircraft of a full airgroup of various carriers? With Wildcats, Dauntlesses, and Avengers now available we could have any of the US airgroups of the Guadalcannal campaign for example. If someone releases a Devastator and a Helldiver you can have any carrier airgroup of the war.

One we are close on is the airgroup carried by USS Ranger during Operation Torch:

VF-9—twenty-seven F4F-4
VF-41—twenty-seven F4F-4
VS-41—eighteen SBD-3, one TBF

And we have in diecast a VF-9 Wildcat from Dragon and a VS-41 Dauntless from Hobby Master. Just need a VF-41 Wildcat and that lone Avenger.

Re: Carrier Air Groups

I'm into theming collections as well. For that reason I'll probably be getting both Carousel 1 Wartime Wildcats, since I have both the VS-2 and VB-3 Dauntlesses, and having these would give me 2/3rds of the Lex and Midway era (no particular carrier) airgroups in 1/48. The Midway red-dotless Dauntless scheme goes all the way to the Solomans campaign, as I'm not exactly a stickler for exact liveries, rather details on models. For the same reason I'm into getting at least a few TBMs in 1/72. Finally that bloody prewar Buffalo looks good, and would look great sitting next to C1s O'Hare Wildcat as a VF-3 Exploding Pussy collection.

Re: Carrier Air Groups

One of the coolest modern ones you could do is the USS Independence during Desert Shield. All the CAG planes adopted the same scheme---black tails with full rainbow stripes. Dragon's VFA-25 F-18 is in that exact scheme/era, so imagine that design with other squadrons/planes. It's the only "matching" modern air wing I can think of. (Otherwise, the only link between squadrons is having the same carrier name painted on, and the tailcode letters)

Re: Carrier Air Groups

I'd like to see a Final Countdown themed Nimitz '81 Air Wing. You could do a Panther's A-6, a Sidewinder's Corsair and bring out a Corgi Sea King to be the Helo the Senator blew up with the flare gun. Best of all, you could have a recon Crusader. Century's already done the Tomcat, now it's time for the rest of manufacturers to step up to the plate.

Another one I'd like to see is a Vietnam Era Air Wing. If somebody does a Crusader, it can escort the A-1 and A-4 that Hobbymaster will do, for a 27 Charlie Air Wing. And for a big deck wing, the aforementioned Intruder and Corsair will do just fine.

You and I must be in the same 'wavelength', skysurfer, because I do want the Sea King helo from the 'Final Countdown' movie be made. Corgi released one already, but it needs the markings updated to reflect the scheme from that movie. Oh and I definitely want the A-7, A-6 and RF-8 Crusader from the Nimitz as well!
