Just started ... recommendations for my collection?

After a visit to the Boeing Flight Museum a few weeks ago, I caught the bug to collect 1/72 scale aircraft. Many, many years ago I use to build 1/72, now I find it easier to collect pre-builts.

After looking at some of the posts in the aircraft models forum I started my collection with the following:
Century Wings F-14A Tomcats #200 and #202
Dragon Models F4U Corsair "White 107"
Corgi Aviation Archives F4U Corsair "White 167"

In the next week or so I plan to add the following:
Corgi B-25 Mitchell USMC VMB-433
Corgi TBF Avenger
Dragon Warbirds F4U-1A Corsair "White 15"

My future list includes the following:
Corgi UH-60 Blackhawk
Corgi H-3 Sea King
Corgi PBY Catalina
Corgi B-17G Flying Fortress
Dragon Warbirds F/A-18F Super Hornet
Dragon Warbirds F-16C Falcon

I'd appreciate any feedback on my wish list choices or if there are models you think I just need to add. I'd really like some recommendations for Japanese Warbirds that woul dlook good with the Corsairs. I work in the college digital imaging lab and will be doing some static shots in the studio in three or four weeks.

Thanks

Re: Just started ... recommendations for my collection?

Hello Turbowolf. Now sit down and think , what do I want to collect and why. What scale? Which era? One of my mistakes was to just buy anything that I took a fancy to. The trouble is there are hundreds of em and I like them all!! I think it is better to have some sort of plan before you get too deep into this hobby. Anyway welcome to the forum and happy collecting. BTW when you have a plan it usually takes about a month and you throw it out the window.

Here are some of my favorites,
All the Swordfish,1/72, P38s, Catalinas.
All the P40s,any scale,
Dragon P47s and Mustangs,
Corgi Me109s 1/32,
Most Gemini's,
The guys here will put you right about the Japanese stuff.
ERRR! I had better stop now or I shall fill the screen,

God Bless America.

Welcome Turbowolf and forget about those puny insignificant 1/72 scale aberrations (except for modern military of course) . Save yourself the pain and start with the perfect scale - 1/48

Welcome to the forum Turbowolf.
You seem to be starting on the right track with a Century Wings F-14 Tomcat.
Enjoy your collection and have fun on the forum.
Don't forget to add some Gemini P-51B Mustangs to your list as well.

Smile Re: collection?

I began in 2004. I learned that if you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there.

YOU MUST HAVE A PLAN.

Start with type or history or country or time period or.... But have some type of plan.

You will read about boxes and boxes of models being stored--or not enough space or getting rid of the kids and turning their room into a gallery for diecast. Yes, you'll have to decide: food or metal planes; kids or models; cats or models; wife or.... don't go there.

Read the Forum. Listen to us silly old/young guys.

We are such diverse addicts; any size will give us a fix. But some are more sophisticated: selective, like those who like dark chocolate tend towards accuracy and detail, like Gemini? Franklin Mint? Nah, all have flaws.

AND: NEVER LIE. To anyone. "No, that box on the proch must be for Willie down the street." Or hide models, displaying them when she is not at home.

"They always find out, Loretta." That's my motto from Moonstruck!

Welcome! Enjoy! And don't ever be afraid to ask a dumb question. I have asked many of them--and I am still friends here.

"Arguably, the Mustang was the best [single-engine] fighter plane that ever flew...."

Re: Just started ... recommendations for my collection?

To me collecting is such a personal thing, that I find it hard, and maybe inappropriate, to make recommendations. It's all about what you find important or appealing that should dictate you collection. Checkout some of the collection pics that some members have posted, you'll notice that no two are the same. I used to think that everyone else collected for the same reasons as me, but being involved with this forum has taught me that this couldn't be further from the truth. Some seek value, some seek a single example of each type, and some seek only one scale, some seek only WWII, some seek only combat aircraft, some seek only famous pilots, and there are those like me. We seek everything! Understand that you don't need to conform to any of these strategies, just collect what makes you happy. This is a hobby, not a chore which is likely what it will become if you spend your time trying to chase the pack.

If I were to make any recommendation it would be, depending on your budget, try something from each scale, something from each brand, and take others opinions with a grain of salt. While I love and encourage the discourse, you'll find that there will always be someone who'll pan your favorite model and rave about something you think is garbage.

The only thing that won't be dictated by your preference will be your collections secondary market value. If this is an issue that you care about buy Limited Editions. Plus, it's just a good feeling to have scored that item that everybody wants but nobody can find.
