Thumbs up Re: Let's talk about paint...

Thank you Hornchurch for the info. Its many years since I built and painted models so I am very rusty on techniques and modern materials. I should at last have a little more time on my hands soon. I have a list of models I want to repaint. I have a few models that I dont like much and an IXO 219 that I can use for practice. (Corgi mustangs)!! First task is to purchase a good airbrush of course. I was stunned to find out how much they cost these days. But you cannot hope to do a good job without the proper tools. Another major problem is to set up a place to work that my good lady wont wander in and raise clouds of dust on one of her cleaning frenzy type days!! Once again thank you Hornchurch your advice will be put to good use. (I keep a little notebook of info picked up from the Hanger).

God Bless America.

Any prob's Jim, just P.M. me, (or) put a call out on this section.

I'd advise you to get, say, a Badger 200 airbrush, which was the staple weapon used by most of the guys at I.P.M.S. Horchurch, including (when he was younger & his eyesight was better !), Ted Taylor (fellow club-member), who used to have his models featured in Tamiya magazine/Tamiya catalogues/Revell catalogues etc.
He would get commisioned to build them for inclusion in the catalogues etc, & luckily we would see most of them in the flesh, just before they hit the shops or would be featured in mag's, i.e. Tamiya's 1/35th Dragon/Wagon Transporter kit, for example.

A Badger 200 may seem dear, initially, but it will give you the excellent results you'll want, IF you mix your paint right (Ted used to say "a milky consistency"- he would use a Revell Omega compressor/ a Badger 200, with a Medium needle & tip, turned down to a LOW pressure - & held CLOSE to the kit) I've watched him spray, numerous times, that's how we learnt it.

Not expecting you to buy a dear compressor, but if you can regulate it down to 15 P.s.i. - " Bob's ya Granny ".

....Ted used to say "a milky consistency"-

I've always heard this as a general rule of thumb, but then I wonder "Are they talkin' 2 percent or whole?".....

Dearest Striped One - you lost me on that 'Yank' phraseology at the end of the sentence ???!!!!!!!! (tee-ing me up again ?)

Ted made it look easy - good equipment, practise & paitience, made for good results......

"Milky, as in, cling to the side of the jar & slide down slowly"

I haven't seen him since I moved, but he has got a website, with photo's of loads of made up kits..........

Use Google & dial-in Ted Taylors modelworks.......can't be hassled with writing out the http;//www. as the characters are sending my eyes home & away !!!!!!!!!!

Skunky (aka O' Striped One), we're concerned about your cholestrol, hence the recommendation to consume 'low fat'/2% milk - you'll get used to it .

I have an Iwata, Badger 150, Paasche, and Testers Aztek air brushes. For some reason only my paint supplier knows I end up using my Badger 150 about 90% of the time. I guess we just get along

I have a SilentAire Super Silent 20A compressor that is vewy, vewy quiet......it was also vewy, vewy expensive.....a little over 500 smackers if I remember I also have a seperate free standing air tank that I keep a second air brush hooked up to and for use if my compressor craps out.

...straight out of the cow's teat...[/i]

Gee, I love that kind of talk

Can we say "teat" on the forum

Only if it's vewy, vewy on topic....
And of course in the best possible taste, as is our tradition.

Don't turn the page, I'm not finished.
