1:18 - Am I missing out?

I found myself standing in a Walmart clearance aisle today. 21st Centrury 1:18 aircraft marked at $20.

I was looking at 2 Big Beautiful Dolls (new box); 2 Old Crows; 2 different F-104's (1 US; 1 Canadian); F-86 - "Huff"; and a Pearl Harbor P-40.
I was leaning toward the "Old Crow," but left the store empty handed. (The F-86 and the P-40 also looked pretty good - in the box.)

I don't own anything 1:18. My collection is overwelmingly 1:72. Space is an issue. But for $20????????????????????? (I could find the space - maybe hang it from my office ceiling....????)

Did I make the right choice walking away empty handed?

(While I'm ok with that call - I am seriously wanting your opinion/perspective on this question - and I thought it might generate some good pro/con discussion - price; scale; space; value; etc.)

Thanks in advance for the replies/discussion.

Re: 1:18 - Am I missing out?

I have (6) 1/18 A/C and space is definitely a concern.. If I were you, I'd pick planes that really appeal to you and buy those.. If you lean more towards WWII, you really can't go wrong picking up Old Crow or BBD as they are good examples of P-51D's.. The only problem with that though is once you buy one, you'll have to buy more..

Well i have those planes already and i have half of them hanging in the game room and the other at my father's study room.
20.00 is a pretty good price i'll tell ya...At least get the Old Crow or what ever you like best and look at it really close to be sure there are no paint flaws on them.

I'm often tempted by other scales, mostly 1/48 not 1/18 but the theory is the same. For me having a collection with a common scale makes more sense. I enjoy seeing the differences in scale and size. The number of models I can display figures in this too. At 1/72 I can have a lot more models out.

Despite that I did get into the Corgi 1/32 models because I got one at a good price. Having a few models that are clearly larger can give you a nice center piece to your collection. 1/32 are big enough for me- I don't think I would go down the 1/18 road. They are just too big for me.

If you get any 1/18th airplane as far as WW 2 goes get Old Crow by 21st. But make sure you get one without any paint blemishes though. Another one to get is either a Hellcat or Corsair. Both made by BBI.

Re: 1:18 - Am I missing out?

I have the very cool BBI P-51 Killer hanging from the ceiling and OldCrow and the Galland 109 in boxes. Not sure where to put them but the price at WM was too good.

Just ordered that neat 1/18 V1 too. $30 for a very unique model. Makes me less sad about missing the Corgi Heinkel with the doodlebug. Everybody needs a doodlebug!

I have quite a bit of storage so don't mind snatching deals, multiples, or really interesting subjects like the V1. Maybe they get displayed and maybe not right now. Heck, I might hang 'em in my boys' room someday.

I say get one you like Doser and just be careful taking it out of the box. You can always Ebay it later and be done with it if you change your mind.

Don't forget the targets are my airfields, Leigh-Mallory, and you're not getting fifty, you're not even getting ten.

Re: 1:18 - Am I missing out?

I have the 21st Century Big Beautiful Doll, Graf Bf 109 and Dortenmann Fw 190D-9 "Black 1" and think all three are fantastic. These planes are definitely huge and will eventually be hung in my family room. They absolutely dwarf the 1:48 WW II fighters and the Hartmann 1:32 that I own, could fit a squadron of 1:72 on the wings. I have my 1:48 in two Ikea cabinets and I could not get one of these birds to fit on top. I believe at least one of this scale belongs in every collection.

. I believe at least one of this scale belongs in every collection.

I'll second that thought.
I'll add that for $20.00 a copy, you should give yourself a "slap up the side of your head" and get back to the store.
If the problem is which one to buy, close your eyes and point. Or buy them all. But get one of them at least.

Re: 1:18 - Am I missing out?

You won't be disappointed at that price, especially if you get the Mustang, F-86 or the F-104. IMHO, those three are the best 21st Century planes. I have all of the different types that 21st Century has released and I've gotta agree with some of the others when they warn that you'll want to get more after your first one!

Re: 1:18 - Am I missing out?

Thanks for all the opinions/comments/perspective. All taken into account, I went back and picked up an "Old Crow." Its still in the box and will probably stay there for awhile.....but for $20......

...You can always Ebay it later and be done with it if you change your mind.

Of course this brings up the Lays potato chip dilema....."Bet you can't eat just one......." (as mentioned.)

Thanks again for the replies.
