BSMITH13:
Thanks for the info.
How long ago did you buy the $15 plane?
(My Wal-Mart also has about 10 1/18 planes on an upper rack so I couldn't se them and the price was $39.84)

Even though they still have the price sticker on them, you should get one down and scan it.. You might be pleasantly surprised...

Re: Wal-Mart clearance days and 21st Century?

I bought a Big Beautiful Doll at Wal-Mart for $25 and have questions/comments about it:

QUESTIONS:
1. Is it safe to use rubber cement to hold up a drooping wing flap?
2. Is there a trick to inserting the rear screw cover? (the air intake makes inserting the screw cover very difficult, so I left it off for fear of scratching the paint).
3. There are 6 Japanese "Rising Sun" kills painted below the canopy. What are the other 31 blank ones for?

COMMENTS:
1. I'm disappointed the wing assembly is loose even with both screws firmly in place.
2. The pilot is is very disappointing---not even an oxygen mask like the P-38 or Tuskegee pilots.

Let's see if I can help...

1. I would Elmer's for the drooping wing flap. I've never tried rubber cement, and it would probably work, but I have had great success with Elmer's in the past.
2. The trick I used was simply to position it on the underside of the wing (plane inverted, obviously), and slide it into the hole. I tapped it down with a Q Tip.
3. The 31 blank kill marks are the price we pay for political correctness and some European laws concerning the display of swastikas. The kill markings were swastikas on the original.

1. BEFORE you put on your screw covers, get out a narrow Phillips Head screw driver and really torque it down. You may want to make sure that the holes in the posts on the fuselage are wide enough to accept the screws. I really had to work on my Old Crow to get the wing to seat tightly, but it eventually worked.
2. Concur. 21st Century is sort of hit and miss with their pilots.

Congrats on your acquisition!

Re: Wal-Mart clearance days and 21st Century?

BSMITH13:

Thanks for the info.

Another question---I'm considering rubber cement for the drooping flap because it isn't permanent, although I 'm somewhat worried it may contain a solvent that may damage the plastic, Is Elmer's permanent on plastic?

As for political correctness, there are limits and BBD's 31 "blanks" exceed them. It's too bad 21st Century didn't substitute 31 Luftwaffe crosses instead of 31 swastikas---it's a lot better than 31 blanks.

Elmers glue is probably the safest option, little worry of damaging plastic surface, and excess can be washed off with water.

CRUVER COLLECTER:

Thanks.
Is Elmer's permanent on plastic or can it be removed later on?

Elmer's can usually be removed with some light soaking with lukewarm water to help loosen up. Have removed parts put on with Elmer's glue in the past and have had no problems. CA and liquid cements are not as forgiving.

Re: Wal-Mart clearance days and 21st Century?

Bad CatToys sells decals for the BBD that have the proper swastikas, they also carry the swastika decals for the tails on the Bf 109's and Fw 190's.

Re: Wal-Mart clearance days and 21st Century?

Long road trip this past weekend. The WM in Clarion PA had the following 21st Century 1/18 reduced to $25.
4 - Avengers Atlantic
8 - BBD Mustangs
3 or 4 - F86 Sabres
1 - Bf 109

This is more 1/18 at one store than the 4 or 5 WM combined closer to home
