Re: 1:18 Bud Anderson P-51D Mustang "Old Crow" Silver bird

That totally sucks then!!...I'd be plenty p.o.'d if I ordered BBD based on TFM's pic and received the above....Who's are they using for the photo?..That's the one I want..

TFM is using 21st's promo picture which is actually a 1/48-1/32 scale model used as the paint master.. The only real thing wrong with the gear is that the gear doors are too short, but they have to do that with a "working" landing gear (unfortunately)..

and tires are anorexic..
but they have to do that with a "working" landing gear (unfortunately)..

Not really...Corgi managed to figure it out with their 1/32nd line

I have to say, I think it's deceptive of TFM to put a photo of a scale model kit to depict the product they're selling. There isn't even a disclaimer saying such. How many others are there?..Most of my online purchases (which means practically all) are based upon my impression with the photos...

True, but no one else has.. You can look at BBIs, and GMPs and they are both just like it... Eagles is correct, but theirs don't "fold".. The use of a pre-pro pic is VERY common and I agree, very deceptive, but they use what they are provided with.. It wouldn't surprise me though if Martin doesn't take better pics of this eventually..

Then I'm now positive that those pre-pro photos that were released for the upcoming F-4 were those of a model kit as well.....I knew that one was too good to be true...

Seems to me that's not the only thing wrong. The gear is also far too skinny (both struts and tires), IMHO.

Absolutely....I don't think the 1/1 version could stand under it's own weight if it's "legs" were that skinny...I don't know why the Mustang landing gear area seems to be such a problem for diecast manufacturers...If the looks of the landing gear is off, it throws the whole appearance down the toilet for me...Mustangs have a rather rugged, robust undercarriage..Even the highly-touted GMP failed miserably in this area..

Absolutely. I just got my first-ever GMP Mustang in the mail yesterday (Cripes-A-Mighty, got it on e-bay for good price) and even though I like the model overall, the gear just isn't right (it's not the only thing wrong with the model either, so I can't agree with anyone who says GMP is "perfection"). Gear aspect is important to some of us...

Re: 1:18 Bud Anderson P-51D Mustang "Old Crow" Silver bird

How does the detail(s) on the 21st P-51 compare to the BBI "As real as it gets" Mustang? I understand that the Series II P-51s from 21st were
re-tooled to look more accurate and blow away the BBI rendition. So is this true? Thanks.

The new tool Mustangs from 21st DO NOT blow away the BBI Mustangs. 21st Century's new tooled Mustangs are better then their first versions but they in my opinion lack the detail of the BBI Mustangs. PLUS the plastic 21st Century has used seems weak and cheap where it could break easily where as the plastic BBI has used in their Mustangs is tough and durable. I'll give 21st some credit though they got the forward rake and dehedral of the Mustang right where as BBI dont have those. But that aside "No!" 21st Centurys new tooled Mustangs dont blow away the BBI Mustangs in any shape or form.

I forgot to add in my post that I do like Old Crow from 21st but I went with Big Beautiful Doll instead. I have had a chance to go to Duxford and meet some of the 78th FG vets and see the Doll in person. I love the paint scheme. She is just darn pretty!
