Panorama in 1:18th scale

Hello again,
Since I have the space for my 1:18th scale models I'm thinking of a Tarmac panorama to set "HUFF" on. I know I'll need an APU with tubing to help in starting the Sabre then maybe some ground crew,as well as a detailed tarmac itself. Ideally I could put any model on it. Now I have to research APU units.

Re: Panorama in 1:18th scale

That sounds pretty cool! Please post your project when it's finished. ''The Huff'' is one my favorite livery of the F-86 Sabre jet, and I have one diecast model of it in 1:48th scale. I was thinking of placing it in a similar setting for a diorama you have in mind, but I couldn't seem to locate some after-market accessories/equipment for that scale. In the former MHI forum, someone had given me some info where to obtain the PSP (pierced steel planking) base. You have any ideas? Thanks.

Re: Panorama in 1:18th scale

Hi Flyxwire,
Since the tarmac where you'll put your model is no more than a board cut to size then painted, the rest will take some work. I'm doing some research on panorama's the model railroad hobby has alot of materials to choose from. We know the focal point is the model and everything around it gives a viewer a since that their prepping the aircraft for flight.

An APU fits this idea well. I'm going with the idea that "Huff" is owned by a guy that was able to buy and restore this F-86. At this point I'm establishing the time period then everything will fall into place. I'll construct my APU based on the Hobart MA1A turbine compressor. The first ones will be mocked up with card stock based on the pilot and sized to the model,as by comparison the APU isn't that big.Once I have the cardstock mock up I can fashion the APU in wood. Since this scene will depict an up to date civilian situation I can borrow tool boxes and stuff from my NASCAR collection. A new hanger floor is painted bright white almost blinding you as you walk in.

I'll keep you posted for sure! But pick your ERA and research materials that will go on the board.

Re: Panorama in 1:18th scale

I have always wanted to do this with one of my 1/18th planes but I'm having a hard time with which one to feature in a diorama. Marines Dream? HHH? or Ridge Runner 3? I've also thought about my Ike Kepford Corsair as well. I just cant decide. God only knows I have enough pilot figs to work with but only if I had ground crew! But now all I have to do is select the best bird to feature.

Any ideas guys?

Re: Panorama in 1:18th scale

Hi Steve,
First one has to figure what you wish to see "such as a run up area" or on the appron being cleared for take off. not much in those areas accept alot of scrub grass and asphalt or concrete. In 1/18th the board would be fairly large "say" 2 feet wide by 2 feet long. Plenty of space to capture the imagination. As for ground grew I think I've seen some odd figures a TRU but have to check again. The model Railroad hobby has G scale figures through Walthers that can be found too. Alph
