Re: Nice Things to Talk About Budapest is a great place to visit. Great Military Museum on Castle Hill ( next to the Hungarian National archives ). Great displays of Austro-Hungarian uniforms and weapons. Liked the Hussars' uniforms.....a very classy war with Napoleon as the tailor !
Great displays of models of all the WW2 stuff which the Germans supplied to the Hungarian army. Lots of ex-Chekoslovakian equipment. I saw a great display surrounding a Schwimmwagon. Also a 75 mm AT gun. Lots of WW2 German uniforms and field equipment and their Hungarian variants.
There is also a poignant display of artifacts and weapons from the 1956 uprising, reminding us what happens when you underestimate the bad manners of the Russian Political Establishment ( in any era )
Budapest is changing fast. Lots of repairs and reconstruction, as well as new builds. However, if you wander off into the back streets you can still find lots of buildings peppered by bullets from '45 and '56 ! Lots of militaria about too. But mostly post-war repro or genuine fakes.
Food is good, cheap and plentiful, if you like a Germanic diet of saurcraut and sausage. There are lots of ethnic outlets too ( and, of course, Big Macs ). Goulash...good !
The Railway museum is a must. Great place.
Walking along the street is an experience. Great buildings and cafes to take breaks in.
Cheers,
