To play hookie/ hooky means to call in sick to work/take the day off to go do something fun instead of working or going to school. It's also known as taking a mental health day (to mentally destress from the pressures of work).
Living in S. California I find that I take quite a few "mental health" days off from work due to the nice weather, beaches and abundance of activities available.
I suspect that in Europe one does not do this too often as European's have much more vacation time then the average American(& Canadian) worker?
