A stronger carboard is much more expensive but HM will give a good thought on this.

How about a different approach. Instead of plastic shells how about using styrofoam ones? This will allow cardboard to stay "thin". AeroArt did it with its 1:72 Mustangs, and it's pretty much the norm with 1:18 scale car models nowadays.
