Re: Heinkel 219 choices

ALL wartime He.219's were painted up, using only TWO basic colours,

RLM 76 Licht-blau ..........overall, top & bottom.

(Light-Blue - though more resembling a Blue-Grey).

AND

RLM 75 Grau-Violet.........splotches, formed into a disruptive pattern,

which were painted over the Top-Surface of the RLM 76.

(explained away, as "Standard" Luftwaffe Night-Fighter colours).

The ONLY Major difference was that some, had......

RLM 66 Schwartz-Grau (Black-Grey) undersides (overall).

So, mostly TWO, occasionally THREE (different shades).

This is true, but with a few minor corrections..

Very, very late in the war, 219s were easily spotted on the ground, so many were field painted with a combination of RLM81 Braunviolet and RLM83 Dunkelgrun to try and camoflage them better..

The "mottling" Hornchurch mentions is actually the reverse type.. The He-219 was sprayed with the base of RLM75 Grau-violet then oversprayed with RLM76 Licht-blau to create the "mottling" effect..
The pic below represents this effect which from a distance looks like dark spots sprayed on light.. (This pattern was applied in the factory as proven by the Udvar-Hazy (NASM) 219 that when the wings were removed, this pattern had been painted on the fuselage under the wing mounts.. I'll post the pic if I can find it)
