 This got me into thinking that maybe this whole canopy issue could be easily remedied by using a stock 1/48 Monogram kit of the P-47 "razorback" that I have stached somewhere?

maybe but my inability to paint canopies well is one of the reasons I'm so into this "pre-made" stuff
This is just FM telling me to save my money!
