| Re: Patton Museum - Fort Knox, KY Some Armor/ Patton Museum historical notes from an Infantryman.
1. The grill on the sedan Patton broke his neck in (he did not die in it) had the front grill rebuilt but incorrectly. The front grill's bars are running the wrong direction, but the local German who did the work didn't know which way they went on that model of car.
2. A King Tiger during the Battle of the Bulge was taken out by a M8 armored car (37mm) with a shot to its rear. The M8 accidentally got behind the tank, fired and took off.
3. The King Tiger was tamed by Russian T-34/85s long before the JS-II series made any impact on the fight. And a Hetzer is credited with knocking out a JS-II, so it wasn't all that either.
4. The statue carved from wood of the General is based on the coroner's report after his death. So every detail is true to his dimensions at time of death.
5. The Panther II in the museum has a G model turret on it, placed there after the war since the intended turret could not be found.
6. It looks like they finally found a cupola for Thunderbolt on display outside. Last time I was there the M4A3E8 had a plate welded over the Cmdr's cupola position.
7. That T95? assault tank was found on a range wasting away in the 70s. Its one of two built IIRC.
8. Find the LST building there to see many more vehicles in repair and not on display. Now for those of you who want to play in and around the tanks there listen up. You getting this Cavtanker........ 1. Move to the Ft Knox area. 2. Volunteer to help in the LST building, be it sweeping up the dry sweep or turning a wrench. You'll get all the tank exposure you want and then some. I have a buddy who while stationed there, got to ride in the KT as it was moved from the paint shed to the museum. |
