I read somewhere that all AOP Cromwells had a dummy gun, as otherwise there was no room inside the turret for the necessary equipment. However, my source claimed, some of these Cromwells received "real" muzzle brakes to better deceive potential enemy observers. Should this be true, then the dummy gun would be virtually identical to the real one, particularly in 1/72nd scale, and HM's model would be right.

What is definite evidence is that some Cromwell AOP tanks were fitted with a real or - at least - a "real-looking" gun, as pictures provided by Hawkonevoodoo and Momo clearly show.
