Suppose you had to pick your number one and two most favorite broadcast network prime time TV series of all time in a number of standard program type genres. It's not as easy as it sounds. For example, my top two favorites by genre are as follows:

Sitcoms: Honeymooners, All In The Family
Sci-fi Drama: Star Trek, Twilight Zone
Cop/Detectives/ Federal Agent Drama: Hill Street Blues, The Untouchables
Medical drama: ER, Universal Medical Center
Legal drama: Law And Order, Matlock
Western: Gunsmoke, Wild, Wild West
Military Drama: Combat, Baa, Baa Blacksheep
General Drama: The Waltons, Fame
General Variety: The Carol Burnett Show, Your Show Of Shows

Obviously, such lists reflect the personality and taste of those who compose them, so there isn't any "correct" answer, nor do the Nielsen ratings necessarily decide the outcome. Several of the shows on my list performed poorly in the rating races when they first appeared. Others, not on my list ,often attained far more spectacular audience levels.
