Over here, I guess it depends on the base you go to. For instance, Shaw has a few gate guards outside the base perimeter, close to the entry post. I pulled into the visitor parking lot, walked over to the guard shack and asked if it would be cool for me to take a few pics. Their response was "Yes go ahead, but don't touch the airplanes, and don't point the camera towards the base itself." That was reasonable.
But, if you pass by a base where you can see the flightline from the highway, do not stop to take pics. The control tower will usually call the local (or state) police to come check you out. | The same is true for the gold depository at Fort Knox. Don't stop to take pictures. Even though it is probably 300-400 meters from a 4-lane highway. |
